Deaths in Indonesia raise global concern Virus kills at least 6 family members Likely infected each other, officials say May 25, 2006. 01:00 AM JIA-RUI CHONG SPECIAL TO THE STAR Six family members in Indonesia who died of bird flu most likely infected each other with the virus, rather than contracting it from birds, raising the possibility the virus is becoming more efficient in spreading among humans. Officials from the World Health Organization stressed that the family members contracted the disease through close contact with each other, and there is no evidence it has the ability to spark a quick-spreading pandemic. But the cluster of deaths in Kubu Sembelang village in north Sumatra still worried officials because it involved a human chain of infection. One person appears to have passed the infection to a second person, who then passed it independently to a third, said WHO spokeswoman Maria Cheng. Previous human-to-human cases of the bird flu have involved only a single link in the chain in which the virus jumps from an infected bird to a human to another human. "This certainly raised an alarm," said Dr. Christian Sandrock, an infectious disease and pulmonary critical care specialist at the University of California, Davis. He said that chain of infections suggests the virus may be hardier in the human body than previously thought. The WHO said yesterday it had no immediate plans to raise its pandemic alert level. So far, 124 people have died from and 218 people have been infected by a strain of bird flu known as H5N1. Most of these cases resulted from close contact between people and birds. The first member of the Indonesian family who contracted the disease was a 37-year-old woman who likely picked up the virus working at a market where there was poultry, Cheng said. Officials believe she died of bird flu May 4, although the cause has never been confirmed because no test samples were taken. Following her death a succession of family members fell ill — two sons, three brothers, a niece and a nephew. All but one brother have since died. A leading Canadian infectious disease expert called the case "quite bothersome." Dr. Donald Low, who runs Ontario's Public Health Laboratory in Toronto, noted it's a large family cluster with victims who were very young to middle-aged. "But probably the most disconcerting," Low said, "is evidence suggesting the virus had been transferred from one person to another, who became ill and passed the virus to yet another person. That's what we refer to as a second-generation transmission and we've never seen this before." Financial markets were spooked by the case. Currencies in Asia, where most bird flu cases have occurred, fell. U.S. commodity prices came under pressure, while shares in poultry companies fell in New York.
